FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. The saga has been completed with four additional expansions packs adding lots of gameplay and narrative content. In this MMORPG, you will experience a brand new way to play with all the available classes, intense characters and narrative, epic combats and travels, and endless lands to explore and conquer.

Gameplay

  • So many challenges: FINAL FANTASY XIV Online offers so many challenges to overcome, lots of diversified places to visit, and a vast amount of dungeons, primals, and quests to beat down and complete. You will travel across so many areas and see so many things that this journey will change you forever.
  • Demanding bosses: No matter if you decide to play solo or with your friends and other players, you will have to fight throughout your journey, and we can safely state that some fights will be demanding. Indeed, you will always have to understand all the mechanics, technics, and cooldowns of the bosses you will encounter. Otherwise, you might have a hard time. That is why playing in teams can be more effortless if you want to count on other people to understand the boss's characteristics.
  • The Disciplines: The class system is subdivided into four disciplines called Disciples of War, Disciples of Magic, Disciples of Hand, and Disciples of Land. Disciplines do not mean anything special, and they are just there to bring more detail and form sub-groups of classes.
  • The Class system: You will be able to level each class from 1 to the max level (which depends on your expansion), and you will also be capable of using as many classes as you want using a single character. It is just amazing as you will be armed to experience and switch among all the available gameplay possibilities. For example, to switch to another class, you only need to unlock it by talking to the head of NPC for the class, and then you just need to change your equipment to play the associated class. However, levels are not shared across classes, so you must level each one separately.
  • Skills: Each class has its own skills and passive traits you will discover, but it does not stop there. For each class you take the time to level, you will unlock a new slot where you can bind to another class's ability (the abilities you have already unlocked by leveling the other class) every five levels (from level 5). Even if there are some limitations, like most skills unlocked above a certain level are exclusive to that class, it really encourages you to explore all the available classes and combine their abilities to explore more gameplay possibilities.
  • The Job system: Jobs let you sacrifice versatility for specialization. The Job system also allows you to dynamically specialize throughout the game and switch whenever you want, like the class system (except in combat, of course). In shorter terms, Jobs share the level and all the abilities and passive traits of their base class. For example, playing an Arcanist, you can specialize in a Scholar (a healer) or Summoner (magic ranged DPS). You will be able to take advantage of all the abilities of the Arcanist plus the specialization-specific abilities. Note that to specialize, the base class needs to be at least level 30 and level 15 in one other class associated with the Job (in the case of Job Scholar, Class Arcanist level 30, and Class Conjurer or Class Thaumaturge Level 15). Pros don't come without cons. The price you will pay for specializing is that you will be able to use only half of the cross-class slots (as explained before, one every ten levels instead of one every five levels).
  • The Disciples of War and Magic: Those classes have a combat/heal role and can be leveled up through killing, field events, and quests, you will love playing them on the battlefield. The Disciples of War groups classes called Pugilist (use Claws/Knuckles and is an avoidance/elemental melee DPS), Gladiator (use swords and is a melee tank), Lancer (use spears and is a mid-ranged melee DPS), Archer (uses bows and is a ranged DPS), Marauder (use two-handed axes and is a heavy melee DPS), or Rogue. The Disciples of Magic groups Arcanist (use books and is a pet-based offensive spellcaster or healer), Conjurer (use wands and is a support and offensive spellcaster), and Thaumaturge (use Staves and is a debuff and offensive spellcaster).
  • The Disciples of Hand and Land: Those classes have not been designed to be used in combat, they are groups of crafting and gathering classes that can be leveled up through gathering, non-combat quests, and crafting. The Disciples of Hand groups Alchemist, Armorer, Blacksmith, Carpenter, Culinarian, Goldsmith, Leatherworker, or Weaver. The Disciples of Land groups Botanist, Fisher, and Miner.
  • A Complete tale: The story of Final Fantasy XIV Online began in 2013, and lots of expansions have been added through the years. Each of them has brought additional narrative content, making you discover the characters and how they relate with each other more deeply and starting lots of diversified arcs. But at the end of the day, and with the release of the Endwalker expansion, the complex but very well-narrated stories have their proper end. It does not mean that nothing else will come after Endwalker, but it has to be considered another part of the tale. You will watch lots of cutscenes throughout the game that may last over 15 minutes. Do not underestimate their importance as they bring lots of depth to the game, and skipping even one of them might confuse you for some time. Enjoy the story because it's golden.

Graphics and sound

To be honest, Final Fantasy XIV Online has brought MMORPG graphics and sound standards to the next level over the past few years. The team made great progress and has been pretty obsessed with providing great graphics and sound throughout the years. It now features state-of-the-art MMORPG graphics with really stylish lighting, smooth shadows, high texture quality, and performant anti-aliasing. Moreover, lots of care have been taken to offer very well-tuned animations and particles effects, first to make your eyes shine, secondly to make sure you can understand everything that happens on the battlefield. The game also lets you tune your graphics experience the way you want depending on your devices through lots of graphics settings.

The very famous Masayoshi Soken composed the vast majority of the saga soundtracks and will transform your experience into an epic journey. In addition, hundreds of different titles have been written to make you live a wonderful, complex, orchestral, and iconic sound experience throughout the game.

Both the great graphics and the high-quality sound truly manage to work perfectly together and provide a rich and fine-paced experience during your whole journey. You will love to discover every piece of graphic and audio art the game has to offer.

Duration and game modes

As a true MMORPG, FINAL FANTASY XIV Online provides the players a multiplayer and a solo experience (this is easier playing some classes than others, but efforts are made to make it more and more solo-friendly). You will be able to play the way you like, either solo or with your friends and other players, but it really manages to offer lots to everyone.

Moreover, you will experience tons of content through lots of extensions that will last hundreds and hundreds of hours, including several expansions and patches named A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker. Several editions are available depending on what content you want to purchase:

  • The Starter Edition: It includes A Realm Reborn and the first expansion, FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward.
  • The Complete Edition: It includes the Starter Edition and the Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and EndWalkers expansions.
