How to defragment: Windows 11, 10, 8.1

If you install and delete programs and files a lot on Windows, you may end up with a fragmented memory, which can cause more system latency. But do not worry as there is a simple way to fix this problem.

Windows 11

  • Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the taskbar.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Click on the System tab on the left sidebar of the Settings window.
  • Click on the Storage option from the left part of the Settings window.
  • Scroll down and click on the Advanced storage settings option.
  • Click on the Drive optimization tile from the list, and a separate Optimize Drive window will open.
  • On the Optimize drive window, you will be able to see the current defragmentation status of your storage.
  • If you want to check if your drives need optimization, select your windows installer drive and click on Analyze.
  • If you want to to manually defrag your drives, select your windows installer drive and click on the Optimize button.

Windows 10

  • Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the taskbar, and type defrag in the search bar.
  • Select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  • Select the disk drive you want to optimize.
  • Select Optimize.
  • Once the defragmentation process is done, you will see OK in the Current status column.

Windows 8.1

  • Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the taskbar, and type defrag in the search bar.
  • Select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  • Select the disk drive you want to optimize.
  • Select Optimize.
  • Once the defragmentation process is done, you will see OK in the Current status column.
