Hogwarts Legacy getting started: best house, house test

Hogwarts Legacy was released in February 2023 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and finally released on PS4 and Xbox One in May 2023. There will be even more witches and wizards joining in the Hogwarts experience. As a student starting their Hogwarts journey, one of the first things you will need to do in Hogwarts Legacy is decide which house you want to be in. Find out which is the best Hogwarts Legacy house for you!

In Hogwarts Legacy you can finally fulfil your fantasies of becoming a witch or wizard in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. To immerse yourself in this world, you will need to decide which house you want to belong to, as this will have an impact on how you interact with Hogwarts. Do you want to join Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin? Once you have made your choice you will be able to fully explore Hogwarts and its surroundings, learn new spells, meet your new teachers and classmates and more.

Which houses can you choose?

When you first step into the famous Hogwarts castle, you must undertake the Sorting Hat test. This hat will ask you a few questions that will help guide your choice, but ultimately will be up to you to choose between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin. You will take the Hogwarts Legacy sorting quiz, but you can select which house you want to be in. Just a quick reminder, here are the houses, their colours and the most common traits of their members:

  • Gryffindor: Bravery (red and gold)
  • Ravenclaw: Curiosity (blue and silver)
  • Hufflepuff: Loyalty (yellow and black)
  • Slytherin: Ambition (green and silver)

How to choose your house in Hogwarts Legacy?

Before you begin your Hogwarts adventure, you should know that there are several implications of choosing a particular house in Hogwarts Legacy. The choice does not profoundly modify the main story of the game, apart from lines of dialogue, here and there. The main noticeable differences are the following:

  • Different uniform colors that influence your gear colors
  • A specific common room
  • Different dialog
  • Introductions to 5th graders in your house earlier in the game

You will therefore need to take these factors into account when talking with the Sorting Hat, especially that of style, as it is always important in an RPG. Although, note that you rarely visit your Common Room, compared to the rest of Hogwarts and its surroundings.

The only question that has an impact on what house you are put in, is this one: "I detect something in you. A certain sense of - hmmm - what is it? You can reply with Daring (Gryffindor), Curiosity (Ravenclaw), Loyalty (Hufflepuff) or Ambition (Slytherin).

How to use the Wizarding World sorting house quiz?

This is a more in depth way of choosing your preferred house, it does however require that you create a legacy account before (if you don't already have one), on the Wizarding World website. Here you can answer a series of more detailed questions than the one or two in game. This will give you a better idea of which house you belong to. You can also take part in the Discover Your Wand quiz. Once you have done this you can link the Wizarding World website with your Hogwarts Legacy account to transfer over your choice. When you start playing Hogwarts Legacy, the game will prompt you to sign into your WB Games Account, or it will automatically recognise it.

Why choose Gryffindor?

Whilst the experience is fairly similar regardless of your house, if you choose Gryffindor, you will have more contact the ancestors of Ronald Weasley, Garrett Wesley - the nephew of the assistant director Professor Wesley. You will also meet Nellie Oggspire and Cressida Blume. You will also be in the company of the little prodigy of your generation, Natasi Onai, and an important companion in your adventures.  The Gryffindor Common Room is found on the third floor of the grand staircase in the Faculty Tower. There will be a hallway with a statue of the One-Eyed Witch (also a secret passageway to Hogsmeade), if you follow this passageway you will enter the Facutly Tower. Take the stairs up to the Gryffindor Common Room and you will find the entrance behind the painting of the Fat Lady.

Why choose Slytherin?

As far as Slytherin is concerned, don't worry, the house isn't exclusively populated with dozens of Draco Malfoys. The students of house Slytherin are as pleasant as their comrades in the other houses. They showcase the illustrious origins and unfailing ambition of the house. Your fellow Slytherins will be Ominis Gaunt, Imelda Reyes and Sebastian Sallow. The latter has a rich and complex story which you can unravel as you play. He will join you at the duelling club and in other adventures. The Slytherin Common Room can be found at the bottom of the Grand Staircase in the dungeon (which is located under Black Lake). If you go down the stairs you will come across a dark room with a snake on the floor. For Slytherin members, the snake will slither onto a wall and create a doorway, for other pupils it will remain a wall.

Why choose Ravenclaw?

The house that celebrates intelligence and curiosity, Ravenclaw is the home of little geniuses who prefer total mastery of magic as opposed to its pure power. You will have the chance to meet Duncan Everett Clopton, Samantha Dare and Amit Thakkar. Amit will join you in side quests and will make you laugh with his passion. The Ravenclaw Common Room is on the fourth floor of the grand staircase. You will see a blue hallway which leads to a green room with a puzzle. You will need to head up the spiral staircase to the top of Ravenclaw tower. There will be a large Ravenclaw bust or an eagle, which will close its wings and open the door.

Why choose Hufflepuff?

Hufflepuff is the most loyal house. Its biggest positive point is its yellow and black colours and the striking emblem of the badger. Hufflepuff's colours tend to work best with gear that you find on your adventures. Hufflepuff's Common Room is by far the most original, located next to the house-elves kitchens on the second floor of the grand staircase. There are lots of plants on display, giving the common room a natural feel. You will meet Adelaide Oakes, Authur Plummly and Lenora Everleigh, and Poppy Sweeting, who has a side quest that is central to the story.

What is the best house in Hogwarts Legacy?

Arguably the best house in Hogwarts Legacy is Hufflepuff. During your play-through of the game, you will undertake several quests that are unique to your house. The Hufflepuff quest takes you to the notorious prison of Azkaban, home to the wizarding world's most dangerous criminals and creatures. If you are big fan of the Harry Potter lore and the series, it would be a shame to miss out on visiting this iconic location. Unfortunately for Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin students, their House-exclusive quests take place within Hogwart's grounds.

What is the worst house in Hogwarts Legacy?

Whilst there is no real bad choice, if you pick Ravenclaw you will be unable to have a unique companion. Each house except Ravenclaw allows you to be accompanied, an enjoyable gameplay feature. With Gryffindor, you will be accompanied by Natsai Onai, an Animagus (a witch or wizard who can transform themselves at will into an animal). For Slytherin you will be helped by Sebasian Sallow, a sneaky and charismatic character. And for Hufflepuff, you will be joined by Poppy Sweeting.

Can you change Houses in Hogwarts Legacy?

In the Harry Potter books and movies, the subject of switching Hogwarts houses was never dealt with. After playing through the game, you may find yourself unhappy with the choice that the Sorting Hat made at the start of the game (although you can have total autonomy over this decision). Unfortunately it is not possible to change Houses in Hogwarts Legacy during your play through. To change houses, you will need to restart the game. That is why it is important to be happy with your choice at the beginning of the game.
