Minecraft Legends is an action-strategy spin-off of the original Minecraft title. This time, you will jump into an epic fight against the piglins and a strange corruption coming from the Nether itself. But don't worry, as the creatures that once were hostile joined your banner to save the Overworld. Riding your horse, you will command your troops, try to take your foes down and bring peace back.

What is Minecraft Legends?

Minecraft Legends is an action-strategy video game developed by Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive. It was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on April 18, 2023.

The game takes place in the Minecraft universe during the invasion by the piglins from the Nether. As the Nether starts to spread across the Overworld, you will bring your banner to save your world and rally all the different mobs and creatures against the common enemy.

  • Lead your troops: This is an action-strategy game, so you will lead your mobs into battle, wielding a sword in hand. As you rush into fights, you will use music to direct waves of creatures to either attack the enemy structures and towers or prepare and organize your defense. If the set of orders you can give is simple at first glance (follow, move here), it becomes more various over time (you can command specific units to focus on a target, for example). Exciting times and thrilling fights are incoming.
  • Expand your army: You will be pleased to find all the different creatures and iconic mobs from Minecraft. Initially, you will start with two types of golems, but more allies will come as you progress through the campaign, like the marvelous creeper.
  • Learning mechanics: The tutorial mission is well-crafted and smoothly introduces you to the story while teaching you the gameplay mechanics. As you defeat your first hordes of invaders using the precious boons the three new and mysterious NPCs gave you, you will feel this story becoming yours.

  • Explore: It is not because you fight against the devil that you cannot explore the world. Indeed, you can take your time discovering the procedurally generated map, find new bird mounts, caves, and fields, and go back to the battlefield when you wish. The Hosts will gently inform you with reminders of the following critical tasks, but the peril will wait, so you can still chill.
  • Upgrade: Instead of getting upgrades by earning experience and leveling up, you will do it in the Minecraft way, which implies using resources to build new things. Hence, you will build what can be called improvement structures using a large number of resources plus a special stone called prismarine (earned by defeating piglins). Once up, these structures will unlock new buildable defenses, new units, and new upgrades and abilities (like the ability to mine for diamonds or others).

Minecraft Legends features quite beautiful graphics with a bit of cel-shading while preserving the artistic direction of the Minecraft universe. The biomes seem to offer a wide range of diversity, the textures are polished, the animations look smooth, and the different visual effects add a good kick to actions.

Duration and game modes

Minecraft Legends features single-player and multiplayer game modes:

  • Campaign: This is the game's main story, where you will lead your troops and fight alongside iconic mobs to defeat the evil that tries to infest the world. You can play it solo, but there is also a co-op (no couch co-op, though, due to screen space requirements, but cross-play is supported for households). The campaign mode is about 18 to 25 hours long.
  • Multiplayer: Two teams of four players start from scratch and must fight to destroy the opponent's team while preserving their own. Initially, you can only gather basic resources (like wood and stone), but coordinating your forces to retrieve prismarine will allow you to build enhanced structures, unlock new tools, and more. You will find all the different biomes from the campaign, as some resources can only be retrieved at specific locations. Take the time to explore the world as you can discover important upgrades and even trade your horse for a beetle (and be able to scale walls). The average length of a multiplayer game is about 20 to 30 minutes. Last but not least, each PvP session is unique, as the world is procedurally generated every time.

Age rating
