The most anticipated games of 2023: Xbox, PS5, PC

This year should be the year that the next generation consoles finally come into their own with dedicated releases that start to push the boundaries of what the PS5 and Xbox Series X are capable of. In this article we will look at a selection of the most anticipated games of 2023 and their respective release dates.

Hogwarts Legacy

Many fans of Harry Potter have been eagerly awaiting the release of Hogwarts Legacy, an RPG set in Hogwarts in the 1800s, long before the events of Harry Potter books and films. In the game you will play as a customisable character that you can form into your own Witch or Wizard. You will also be able to choose your preferred Hogwarts House. There are  duelling against other Witches and Wizards, flying on a broom (or Hippogriff), although for now, no Quidditch (we can stay hopeful that it may come as an added feature in further releases). Hogwarts Legacy was  released on February 10th for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and the PC version was released on April 4th 2023. The game for Nintendo Switch went out  on July 25th, 2023

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Cal Kestis returns in the follow up to the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This Star Wars single player begins five years after the events of Fallen Order, which itself began five years after the events of Star Wars Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was released on March 17th, 2023, on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC. It won't be released on the PS4 or the Xbox One. The game's focus on the newest generation of consoles will hopefully allow Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to push the boundaries of what these consoles are capable of.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, released in 2017, has been in development for several years. It will follow the adventures of Link as he explores the Kingdom of Hyrule. You will be able to explore the land as you wish, the game continues the same open-world approach as the Breath of the Wild. There are no new areas to explore such as dungeons and floating islands.  It was released exclusively for Nintendo Switch on the 12th May, 2023.

Diablo 4

The much anticipated follow up to Diablo 3 takes place in the aftermath of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. The daughter of Mephisto, Lilith has been summoned by cultists. Lilith will be able to establish power in the Sanctuary after the forces of angels and demons were depleted. You can play the game as one of five classes: the Barbarian, the Sorceress, the Druid, the Rogue and the Necromancer. Diablo 4 was released on June 6th, 2023, for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox one and PC.

Street Fighter 6

The next entry into the Street Fighter series, the famous arcade fighting game. In this new release there are three principal game modes: World Tour (a single-player story mode), Fighting Ground (local and online vs battles) and Battle Hub (online mode). Street Fighter 6 has 18 characters upon launch, with 6 of these being brand new. It was released on June 2nd, 2023, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Final Fantasy 16

Square Enix's Final Fantasy 16 will be set on Valisthea, a world that is divided between six nations. The story is expansive and will feature Clive who begins the game as Joshua's bodyguard. In Valisthea the powerful force of the Eikons, magical creatures from the Final Fantasy series are disrupted by the second Eikon of fire, Ifrit. The game follows the ensuring war between the Eikons. The game was released as a timed exclusive on the PS5 on June 22nd.

Redfall is a supernatural co-op shooter set in Redfall. Players can choose to play as a Devinder Crousley (a cryptozoologist), Layla Ellison (a telekinetic), Remi de la Rosa (a combat engineer) or Jacob Boyer (a supernatural sharpshooter). The gang will fight off vampires, cultists and more. The game was released for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on May 2, 2023.

Assassin's Creed Mirage

The past few entries into the series, AC Origins, AC Odyssey, AC Valhalla have been open-world RPGs, allowing the gamer to explore the worlds freely. Assassin's Creed Mirage will be a return to Assassins Creed's more linear, city focused games. There will be a greater focus on stealth, parkour and assassination, gameplay elements which are appealing to fans of the series orignal releases. AC Mirage will allow players to inhabit the role of a younger Basin (first seen in AC Valhalla) as he explores the city of Baghdad in the year 861. The game will be released on October 12, 2023, and will be available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, EPIC, PC and Amazon Luna.

Stalker 2 Heart of Chornobyl

Stalker 2 Heart of Chornobyl will be the fourth game released in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, and the first game in the series released on consoles. In this new game, we will be able to travel through the giant open world of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, following the main character, a lone stalker named Skiff. Stalker 2 Heart of Chornobyl's release date is set for December 2023 on PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was scheduled to release in 2023, but Rocksteady has decided to push it back to February 2, 2024. We still decided to include this game in our list, as this action-adventure third-person shooter has been talked about and expected a lot this year. Perhaps the postponement of the release dates is due to some criticism regarding the plot, some aspects of monetization and the requirement of a constant connection to the network. We just have to wait until February to see how much the game creators listen to the opinion of the gamers community. The plot of the upcoming game follows the events of Batman: Arkham Knight and is centered on the Suicide Squad's mission to defeat the villain Brainiac, who has managed to subdue the Flash, Superman, Batman and other members of the Justice Squad. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X consoles, as well as on PC via the Steam digital store.
