One of the most complete and simplest dictionary apps is the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. It's available for Android, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The main version is absolutely free, but contains ads, which, however, can be disabled for for $2.99 per year. The app also offers Thesaurus, Sample Sentences, Audio Pronunciation, Voice Search functions and much more. For Apple devices users, iCloud sync is available.
English Dictionary & Thesaurus
English Dictionary & Thesaurus is built upon WordNet, one of the largest databases of English, elaborated by Princeton University. It is especial in that it is not organized like a traditional dictionary: the words here are grouped according to the principle of cognitive synonyms, interconnected by conceptual, semantic and lexical links. Simply put, the app explains how a certain word is related to other words. Another feature that not all dictionary apps have is that it also offers a tool to identify words when you transfer them from other apps. It's a free app with in-app purchases.
Oxford Dictionary of English
Oxford Dictionary of English is one of the recognized authorities of the English language, and it is perhaps the most classic and prestigious dictionary of all, especially valuable for those who create literary or scientific works. The free version contains a dictionary, but it's much more convenient to use the paid version because it doesn't have any ads. It also has additional features such as, for example, Camera search – a tool that scans written words and translates them.
Advanced English Dictionary
Advanced English Dictionary is a useful app when you search for certain word and also for learning English. Besides the offline dictionary with meanings of more than 800 thousands of words, examples, synonyms, antonyms and other information, it offers the functions of Voice Translation, Spelling and Pronunciation, English Idioms. It also has some additional entertainment features like crossword puzzles. The application can be downloaded for free for Android only, but advanced features are paid. It also contains adds.
English Dictionary - Offline
This dictionary is absolutely free and has a user-friendly interface. If you don't want to spend money, then this is your option. This application is linked to Wiktionary and users can add missing definitions to it, so you can't always be sure of the accuracy of the translations, and if you want 100% certainty, it's best to double-check in another dictionary.
Longman Dictionary of English
This application is developed by the creators of the well known Longman Dictionary of Modern English. It not only has a classic downloadable dictionary, but also offers online grammar & collocation tips and Thesaurus. Longman Dictionary is also very good tool for language learning. Some users complain that the download and installation on the device takes a very long time, so please be patient. Not available for free and compatible only with Android.
KIds Picture Dictionary
The downloadable dictionary app for kids is of course not a substitute for a full-fledged dictionary and is playful in nature so that you and your child can expand their vocabulary together. KIds Picture Dictionary is based on pictures of words, and also has audio recordings of words and a feature that allows you to record and play spoken phrases.
