Toshiba Laptop - Reset to factory settings

Toshiba does not include recovery CD's with laptops. Instead, Toshiba created a hidden partition in the hard drive that contains the operating system and hardware device drivers which are required to reset a Toshiba laptop to factory settings. A recovery CD can be created or burned from the contents of the hidden partition. To reset a Toshiba laptop to factory settings from the hidden partition, press on the zero key when turning on the laptop computer. To reset Toshiba laptop using the recovery disc, insert it into the DVD ROM drive, change the settings in the BIOS to boot from CD/DVD and restart the system.

Create Recovery Media

To start Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator, do the following:
  • Start> All Programs> Toshiba> Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator.

  • The Disk Creator Window will open.

  • The number of required DVD's will be indicated as well as their format.

Create Recovery Discs

Once equipped with the / disk (s) required and after choosing if you want to check (s) drive (s), you can switch to burning.
  • Click the Create button at the bottom right
  • A message asking you to insert a disc appears and the supported format. So Insert your DVD and click OK.
  • Burning starts, a loading bar indicates the progress of the operation.
  • If you checked the Verify box, Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator will check the dvds individually once engraved.
  • If you were asked several disks, you will have to insert them as the operation progresses.
  • Engraving and verification, will message will appear to indicate the operation is finished.

Using the Recovery partition

To restore your laptop to its factory settings, follow these steps:

Warning: All data on the hard drive will be erased. Back up any important data before proceeding. Make sure the computer is connected to a power supply and do not switch it off or restart during the process.
  • 1) Hold down the power button for ten seconds to switch off your machine
    • Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.
  • 2) Press and hold the zero key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook
  • 3) When the machine starts beeping, release the zero key
  • 4) When prompted by the warning screen, select Yes to continue with the system recovery
  • 5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software and click Next
  • 6) Select Recover to out-of-box state and Click Next again
  • 7) Click Next to Start the recovery

Using the Recovery Discs

If the above method doesn't work try this one:

To perform the restore, you will need the restore DVD (s) you created above.

Boot on CD/DVD

  • Turn on your computer.
  • When the Bios Image appears, tap on F12 which will permit to choose on what to boot.

  • BOOT menu appears. Insert your DVD (# 1 if you have more than one). Select CD / DVD using the Up / Down arrows on your keyboard and press ENTER.

  • Windows now loads the necessary files on your DVD.

  • If you have correctly changed the boot sequence, you should get 2 options:
    • Start Windows normally.
    • Perform a System restore.
  • Opt for the latter and follow the on screen instructions to return your PC to its original state

Restore to Factory Settings

  • Once you have booted from the DVD, and the files are loaded, you get to the start window of the restoration that will allow you to choose the language of it. Then click Next.
  • A window appears, allowing you to choose the installation, Windows XP / Vista 32bit and 64bit. (Option available on certain models). In case this option is not available, you will not have a choice. Then click Next.
  • A warning appears, warning you that your hard disk will be completely erased. Confirm with OK.
  • File copying starts. If your restoration has several DVD, you will have to insert them in the proper order during the process.

At the end of the process your computer will turn off. You will need to start it again to configure the settings
