How to find out a person's IP address on Facebook (2024)

Want to know who's behind the message sent to you via Facebook chat? What if this is a fake profile? There are several methods on how to track another user's IP address on Facebook Messenger.

How to find out the IP address of the person who is sending you messages on Facebook?

First of all, you should know that finding the IP address of another Facebook user can provide you with data such as their geographic location, but it will not allow you to get their first or last name. You should also consider that many computers have dynamic IP addresses, meaning their IP addresses are constantly changing. Alternatively, the other person can hide their real IP address using a VPN or proxy server. Given these options and conditions, we explain how you can obtain this information.

You may read on some sites that you can see someone's IP address by chatting on Facebook or Messenger from your computer and using the netstat -an command in the Windows console. However, the IP addresses you receive belong to Facebook, not the person you're talking to. Therefore, we offer the following alternative: ask another user to send you emails.

If this person sends you an email, you will be able to find the sender's IP address because this information is usually found in the email headers. To do this, follow these steps:

In Gmail

Right-click the email and select Properties > Message Origin or View Source.

The IP address should appear in the X-Originating-IP or Received: From fields.

In Outlook

Open the email and click the three dots icon in the top right corner (More Actions).

Choose View > View Message Source.

In the next window, look for the Sender IP Address, X-Originating-IP, Allowed Sender or Client IP Address option. You can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + F to search for any of these terms. There you should find the source IP address.
