How to install Mozilla Firefox on your Chromebook?
Yes, you can install Firefox on your Chromebook. You have two options:
Install Firefox from the Google Play Store
- Install the Firefox browser from Google Play. You can install it on newer versions of Chrome OS (x86-based Chromebook running Chrome OS 80 or later).
Install Firefox as a Linux app
- At the bottom right of your Chromebook, select the time.
- Select Settings > Advanced > Developers.
- Under to Linux development environment, select Turn On.
- Follow the on-screen instructions (it can take up to 10 minutes).
- Finally, a terminal window will open as you now have a Debian 10 environment. You will now be able to run Linux commands.
- Now go to the Terminal to see if you have the correct version (cat /etc/os-release)
- If the version is not 10 or above you will need to run the update script (sudo bash /opt/google/cros-containers/bin/upgrade_container)
- The time taken will depend on your internet speed and your Chromebook. Once finished, restart your Linux container (by restarting your Chromebook).
- Then enable Flatpak, a new packaging format for Linux.
- Once the setup is complete, you can install Firefox from the Terminal: flatpak install firefox
